Life and Lessons from the Country – 1

Hey, hey, hey, what is happening? So much going on around here, June and July have been such busy months on the Cohnpound, but I’ll get to that in a bit.

I thought by now, 8 months living in the country, I’d be able to bring you great tips, tricks and tutorials. I thought I would have awesome insight on the good, bad and ugly of living in the woods. Maybe a lesson on composting, or raisining healthy chickens, or a super secret DIY bug spray for those annoying black flies that have been plaguing my poor, hard working, sweaty husband (TMI?)…but to be very honest, I’m still learning. Every damn day.  And as much as I want to bring the world all of my uncovered secrets of a happy, healthy, self-sustaining life in the country I am a novice and I feel like I have so much to learn about country life. (I CAN say that apple cider vinegar mixed with water and dish soap in a mason jar did NOT attract flies for me, perhaps I did it wrong.) LOL!

All of the blogging courses I’ve taken and articles I’ve read say you need to give your readers something in every post. You need to make it extraordinary and inspirational…well, I got nodda! BUT, before you start thinking that I’m all “whoa is me”, I thought I would change up these posts so they have a little more consistency and maybe offer a few takeaways. For now (because it always changes!) I’m going to break these posts into a few different sections. Maybe begin with What’s New, I could share What’s Cooking (think links to recipes I’m using). What’s The Skinny could be about my fitness journey. How about What’s Going Up (or something like that, it’s a work in progress, k?) and review some of the projects we’ve got going on….you get the drift, right? So here goes:

What’s New?

As I mentioned, June and July were BUSY! We celebrated family graduations, birthdays, the 4th of July! Graduations are my favorite! They are full of such hope and inspiration. Check out this letter I wrote to my son when he graduated a couple of years ago!

But the highlight so far has been celebrating Hubby’s 50th Birthday. We had friends and family over that had yet to see our new home and although the weather was not the best, we ended the long day with a bonfire and a glass of wine. Harry was still working on his 50 beers for 50 years, but that is a story for another day.

What’s Cooking?

Happy Independence Day!

We enjoyed the company of several friends at a 4th of July party on the 7th and I was excited to share two yummy salads.

Check out this yummy Buffalo Chicken Pasta Salad by the great folks over www.thecreativebite.com

Or if you’re looking for a gluten free, lower carb, meat free option, check out this delicious Sweet and Sour Thai Cucumber “Pasta” salad from a great site I happened upon https://peasandcrayons.com/

What’s going up?

(ok, this will change when I get a little creative inspiration)
Pallet Patio
Our DIY pallet patio for the grill
This great DIY Fire pit made from rocks around the property
The beginnings of a 20′ x 30′ enclosed back yard filled with pea gravel for the pups (much more to come on this!)
A flourishing front yard, Harry is so diligent about watering it.

What’s just ahead?

We harvested our first few crops this month, radishes! Although I’m not a huge fan of the radish, these were extra spicy and have made a nice addition to a few salads. I was going to wash and add the greens to our salad as well, but Willow thought they were for her and took a bite…I didn’t thin these out as much as I should have so they aren’t getting very big. (another lesson)

But, check out these BEAUTIES!

Yellow squash at 6 weeks
The squash are coming!

The summer squash should be ready in a matter of days. I don’t think I’ve ever had squash plants this big! I’m waiting on my ripening tomatoes like a 42 week pregnant woman waiting on her first born…but I know they will be worth the wait. Peas, carrots, cucumbers, melon, potatoes and more will be coming along as well. The garden is truly my happy place (except when I see snakes – but I’m getting better at not feeling like I’m going to puke.)

I’ve got so much more to share but dealing with the technical aspect of blogging has got me frustrated and just ready to say good night. Stay tuned for a lot more to come….

Four leaf clover
“The best luck of all is the luck you make for yourself.” ~Douglas MacArthur

I’ll leave you with this special find…I’ve been searching for one since, I don’t know, EVER! Really though, this has been on my wish list for many, many years..last week, while weeding the garden I came across this little good luck charm. I will be ending my search for four leaf clovers now that I have found one.  What’s the saying? Many opportunities are lost  because people are out looking for four leaf clovers? Time to focus on creating luck, not looking for it!
