A message to my son on graduation day

Ian's grad picA messages for my son, who will walk across the stage and accept his high school diploma tomorrow:

High school does not define you. Whether to you think you’ve had the best times or the worst times (I’m guessing both), there’s a lot more to come. You may have heard that these are the best days of your life, I can honestly say that your best days are yet to come. Be flexible with who you want to be in life, you are allowed to redefine yourself over and over. As long as you show compassion for others, follow your dreams and remain happy you can’t go wrong. I need to tell you that as an adult you will fail more than you succeed. You will continue to make mistakes, you may let people down and you may even disappoint yourself. For every failure you experience, as hard as it may be, use it as a lesson. Become stronger, wiser, and better at being you. Enjoy your successes, they will be well deserved and hard-earned. Use those moments to get you through the inevitable hard times. Life is a series of ups and downs. Be thankful for both, without one, you can’t fully feel the other. We will always believe in you and will continue to guide you, but the world is yours my handsome boy. Take it and do great things.
