Life and Lessons from the Country – 4

A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor — such is my idea of happiness. ~ Leo Tolstoy

I think I’m an introvert. No, seriously, stop laughing! Since we moved to the country I’ve noticed how much I love and get energized from being “away from it all” and so I did a little research and there is a TON of information on the web, but I found THIS ARTICLE from The Huffington Post very relatable!  Now don’t get me wrong, I love being around family and friends. My job pretty much revolves around talking to people all day. But to me, being in my garden, checking out the wild life on the pond, taking walks with the dogs, talking to the chickens and just being quiet is my new found therapy.  Get a load of our largest turtle on the pond (who we call “Grandpa”) sunning himself. We think he’s introverted too.

A view to the pond.

What’s New?

Willow was back to her normal self in less than 24 hour after her spaying. When the vet told us to keep her quiet for 2 weeks I (not intentionally) laughed out loud. Think cackle mixed with a dose of uncertainty. I made the vet’s head tilt to the side a little. She is a spry one and it has been difficult keeping her from jumping, running and tackling her brother. We’re doing our best. Here she is on the evening after her surgery still feeling the effects of anesthesia. Harry was concerned that she hadn’t had anything to drink so he brought her over a water bowl, which she proceeded to fall asleep in. We took it away quickly for safety reasons. Notice her little onesie! The vet offered this in lieu of the cone of shame. So far so good, she doesn’t seem to mind it and it certainly has kept her from bothering her incision.

And here is a video of her 8 days post op…(I just learned how to embed a video vs. linking one! #BeginnerGeek)

What’s Cooking?

Can you guess? (It’s not that hard). What a quick and easy weeknight meal sausage and peppers are. We cooked these up, tossed them with some leftover pasta sauce and ate them on a hoagie roll. Click here for the recipe I loosely followed from a great site I happened upon this week – The-Girl-Who-Ate-Everything.com.

Guess what’s for dinner?

What’s The Update?

Remember back in February when Harry flipped the switch and we started generating solar power? HERE’S A LINK to the post where I gave a quick update. And here are a couple of pics just for fun from that awesome day!

It’s solar time!

Well, to make a long story short, our electricity company has been “estimating” our usage since then and sending us a bill based on our December’s consumption. They haven’t read our meter since the end of January!!! And yes, I’m embarrassed to say that we’ve just been paying the $200 bill each month thinking they would come and reconcile sooner rather than later. Well, last month I had had it…I ended up calling in our reading (you can do that!), our account went into review status for a couple of weeks but we finally received a reconciled bill….check out this baby!!! AND we have a credit to boot…THRILLED! Now the goal is to keep banking kWhs so we can get through the winter electric bill free!

OH YEAH!

What I’m Obsessed with…

This is new to the blog, but I thought I would start doing some small reviews and or referring some great products with links to Amazon for potential pennies. (see my disclaimer) I am recently obsessed with organization. I heard on a podcast that if you want your closet to look as neat as possible, all of your hangers should be the same.  If you are like me, you may have some wood ones, some plastic, a few nice ones but mostly wire hangers…and those are all different colors and sizes…so I pulled the trigger and bought 100 of the same hangers! I can’t wait to get them all up…maybe I’ll take a before and after pic. Now I just need to figure out how to dispose of the old ones! So here is a link to the HANGERS and to the BOOK that helped out tons when we downsized from a 2400+ sqft colonial to our 1800 sqft ranch.

I know I didn’t give a garden update this week but I’m planning a whole separate post on that over the next few days…stay tuned, I’ve got a few different titles for it, one being, “My First Year Having a Large Garden was an Epic Fail.” Or, “My Fall Garden Plans, How I will Try to Redeem Myself.”

Alright friends, as always, thank you for stopping by and keep reaching for your dreams.
Love,
The Cohns
